Innovative co-operative approaches to business and community endeavours

Featuring new co-ops formed in New South Wales (January - July 2003)

Graffiti Busters Co-operative Limited The Co-operative runs graffiti removal and cleaning service in Department of Housing estates, Wallsend, NSW.

Tamworth Produce Marketing Co-operative Limited The members have developed and are managing a centralised register of their produce. The register is available to members and prospective buyers. Members are responsible for analysing the quality and subsequent grading of their produce.

Northern Beaches Organic Co-operative Limited The co-operative operates a retail outlet for selling high quality organic groceries and environmentally friendly products. It is endeavouring to reduce the impact on the environment by using refillable containers or recycled packaging.

Great Northern Railway Lines Co-operative Limited The co-op is based in Glen Innes. Members are actively pursuing Short Line Rail Operator Capacity.

Native Hardwood Furniture Manufacturers Co-operative Limited A feasibility study highlighted a viable development opportunity for marketing contemporary, native hardwood fine furniture. Strong local industry networking resulted in establishing a core group with a collaborative approach to new market expansion. This Coffs Harbour based co-operative has since received assistance from government (federal and state) and industry to develop a strategic marketing plan.

Burrawang Co-operative Limited Formed to purchase land and provide sustainable housing and leisure accommodation for members in Coledale. Membership includes people with longstanding concerns about the environment and social justice. Members are actively involved in maintaining a section of land as a nature reserve.

Murri Ibai Aboriginal Co-operative Limited This co-operative was established to develop a multi-faceted venture incorporating culture based tourism, mixed farming, agriculture and retail opportunities for indigenous people of Collarenebri and district.

Aspire Co-operative Limited The co-operative was established to create safe activities and training programs to inspire positive change in the community. Members recognised the need for expertise in adventure training. Aspire co-operative is based in Orange and provides services to the surrounding districts.

Blaxland Gallery Co-operative Limited The co-operative formed when a group of artists agreed to promote their artwork locally. The co-op runs a retail outlet for art, craft and design works produced by the members.

Tourism Macarthur Co-operative Limited Research highlighted the need to promote the Macarthur region's natural, cultural and heritage sites to local residents and potential tourists. The co-operative intends to publicise the region as a special tourist destination.
