The Peppercorn Artists Group in Richmond (Tasmania) has been formed by a local group of artists to re-open the Peppercorn Gallery as a co-operatively run outlet for their work. The Peppercorn Gallery had a long-standing reputation as an outlet for fine art and craft and it is the aim of the group to maintain this reputation.
Members of the group share the running costs, and share the time of operating the gallery, which allows members to have their creations on show as well as time to produce work. It also gives members more control over the range and pricing of their artwork and allows flexibility for experimental and creative pieces, which can be put on display for sale, without presenting an exhibition.
The founding members of the group consist of Angie Cooper, a painter of Tasmanian scenes in a vibrant and colourful style, Margaret Godfrey, who makes Tiffany sun catchers of Australian birds and animals and works in slumped glass, Peter Godfrey, who creates trinket boxes from Tasmanian timbers, and Scott Thompson, who also works with Tasmanian timbers to produce a range of functional woodcraft items.
To overcome problems in attracting additional partners, a second tier of membership was introduced, with associate members paying a lower rent, but still 'doing their time' in the Gallery in order to have the outlet open seven days a week. This group comprises Tess Fletcher, who dyes and spins the wool for her weavings, Lesley Foxcroft, who paints and sketches, including commissioned pet portraits, and Lia Woodward, a contemporary artist.
Other selected Tasmanian craft-artists also sell work on commission, such as jewellery, glass, pottery, aluminium, bronze, marquetry, black and white photos, collectable teddy bears and dolls, embroidered evening bags, and candles.
The co-op is still seeking more members.
